Department 69 - Sustainability Policies

The Department is responsible for the formulation of strategies, concepts, legislation and methodologies in the areas of EU and national policies in the context of the European Green Deal and the sustainable finance agenda, in cooperation in particular with the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Transport, including the assessment of the fiscal impacts.

The main task of the Department is to analyse policies for the transition to a low-carbon economy and to develop proposals for measures to reduce the vulnerability and strengthen the resilience of the economy, its productivity and competitiveness, while ensuring a high standard of living for the population and seeking to minimise the adverse impacts of measures on the environment and the society.

Furthermore, the Department helps create an environment which mainstreams environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects into investments and economic activities and coordinates the development of the ESG approach within the public administration. The Department contributes to the identification of public investment opportunities in financing sustainability and ensures that adequate national frameworks are in place for financing sustainable projects and investments.

The Department contributes to the fulfilment of the obligations of the Czech Republic associated with the participation in selected working groups of the European Commission and the Council of the EU related to the European Green Deal and the sustainable finance agenda by producing briefing papers and positions of the Czech Republic for the representatives of the Ministry of Finance, in the framework of the activities of the ECOFIN Council, the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC), the EFC Alternates and the Economic Policy Committee (EPC).

In the areas of green transition and sustainable finance, the Department collaborates with international financial and non-financial institutions and organisations such as the OECD, the EIB, the EBRD, the IMF, the WB and the UN.
